CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a condition that causes fatigue severe enough to interfere with a person's ability to participate in normal work, recreation, or social activities. Fatigue caused by CFS does not improve substantially with rest.

People used to believe that CFS was just a symptom of depression and that the symptoms were "all in the head". Most experts now agree that CFS is a distinct physical disease with physical symptoms. Although poorly understood, CFS is quite real and can be disabling for many people who have it.

However, mot people who have chronic fatigue do not have CFS. There are many health problems that can cause fatigue. CFS can be diagnosed only after a thorough evaluation has ruled out other possible causes of chronic fatigue. Unfortunately, there are no laboratory or X-ray tests that can diagnose CFS

CAUSE:
The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown. Although some people appear to develop CFS after having a viral or bacterial infection, there is no evidence to support a clear cause-and-effect releationship between infectious diseases and CFS. CFS cannot be passed from person to person like the flu.

Other theories about the possible cause of CFS point to disorders that affect the body's natural defense system and to abnormalities of the hormonal (endocrine) system. There is evidence that CFS indicating CFS involves the nervouse system as well.

SYMPTOMS:
The defining symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is new, Severe Fatigue that has lasted at least 6 months and does not improves significantly with rest. The fatigue caused by CFS must be severe enough to interfere with daily work, educational, recreational or social activities.

The fatigue and other following symptoms may begin suddenly over 24 to 48 hours or may develop gradually over weeks or months.

In addition to fatifue, people with CFS have symptoms that may include sleep problems, a decreased ability to think clearly and concentrate, memory problems, fever and headaches, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, and tender glands in the neck or the armpits.

Normal activity and light exertion are often exhausting for a person with CFS and mat make symptoms worse.

TREAMENT:
***Home treatment is a very important part of treating CFS. Adjusting you daily schedule, improving your sleep habits, and getting regular, gentle exercise can often help relieve and control symptoms.

***Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin may help releive muscle and joint pain, headaches and other physical synmptoms. Pain releivers that may become addictive with frequenst uise are generally used only in the most severe cases on a short term basis.

***If you have psychiatric problem, such as depression, treament for that condition can also help relieve symptoms of CFS. With CFS treating both physical and psychological factors is important.
