WHAT'S IN A NAME
The names that we now know as first names or forenames, or given names or christian names, were originally the only names that people bore. when in the medieval times, it became necessary to distinguish people of identical names from one another--- surnames arose to specify which particular person's family or ancestry.

Where did the names actually come from? the mention of John and Mary indicates a prime source--- the Bible. the early saints were the first to adopt, or were given the biblical names.

Most of the names are Hebrew in origin and in many cases has a meaning that related in some way to its bearer or was specifically devised to do so.

example: Jeremiah has name appropriately meaning "appointed by God" and Samuel, king and prophet has a name meaning "asked of God"

Here are some of the names that has been commonly used:

ABIGAIL..... A name of biblical origin, from Hebrew, Abigayil, meaning to say , My Father Rejoices.
