A VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY.....Part One |

SWITZERLAND..... Women did not get the right to vote until 1971.
CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC..... since 2003 coup, elected government has been suspended, but plans are nder way for a multiparty elections and a return to civilian rule.
SOUTH AFRICA..... Blacks did not have the right to vote until 1994 with the end of apartheid.
SWAZILAND..... Legilative elections are held, but only for monarch endoresed candidates.
IRAN..... The voting age is 15, the youngest in the world.
GULF STATES..... In 1998 Qatar gave women the same limited voting rights as men. Last year Oman allowed all citizens to vote for the first time for a consultative council. This month Saudis vote for the first time in countrywide municipal elections. In Kuwait women can't vote, and only 10 percent of men are eligible. |
