IN BRIEF.......
BUSTING A BREAST-FEEDING MYTH.

A glass of wine might make dinner with your mother in law easier, but contrary to the old folktale, it won't help with breast-feeding. A new study from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia founD hat mothers made about 13 percent less milk after drinking juice spiked with the amount of alcohol in 1 to 2 glasses of wine than they did after downing a virgin concoction. Why? Probably because theie levels of a key lactation hormone plunged 73 percent after they imbibed.

A SHORT OR RELIEF FOR CARPAL TUNNEL

Surgery is usually the first resort for serious carpal tunnel pain, but it turns out cheaper, less-painful steroid injections are a better remedy for immediate relief. In a recent Spanish study of 163 wrists (belonging to 101 people), roughly one third more wrists were healed 3 months after an injection that after surgery; the methods were equally effective at curbing pain and numbness after a year. If two courses of injections fail to deliver relief, the researchers say, then it's time for surgery.

THE NEW DISH ON FISH AND MERCURY

Fish lovers may want to breathe a sigh of relief -- and order swordfish once in a while. While it's possible to get neurological damage from eating too much of fish such as swordfish or tuna that have high level of mercury, a new study suggests that low levels of mercury aren't dangerous. After testing almost 500 people aged 50 to 70 with typical eating habits, and average levels of mercury in their blood, researchers reported in the journal of the American Medical Association that there was no clear link between mercury and problems with thinking, memory, or coordination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency agree that for most people eating any type of fish now and then isn't dangerous. But women who are or might get pregnant and children are still advised to stick with low mercury seafood like shrimp, salmon, and canned light tuna.

CHARM SCHOOL FOR DOCTORS

Everybody has run-ins with rude physicians - the onew how make snide comments about your weight or berate the nurses. What they needs is an attitude makeover, and an Arizona company is offering weeklong retreats to get the job done. Classes cover etiquette, how to handle stress, and how to talk to patients and staff with respect. If you see a bad doctor, Amy Esplin,CEO of the company behind the classes, has some advice: Out it's Web address (www.passusa.org) on a note, and slip it to the MD's unlucky office manager- or tell your insurance company, hospital administrator or state medical board about your experience.
