WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN 2 0 0 6
The coming year promises to usher in fresh trends in fashion, food, tech and travel. Our take on the new and noteworthy.

** DESIGNER EYES
Tom Ford Eyewear debuts this month with the slick Jennifer model. The former Gucci guru, who has a special love for sunglasses, clearly see bigger as better.

** TATTOO YOU
Body art is back in fashion as brands like Ed Hardy T shirts and A & G cashmere flaunt tattoo motifs. Even Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere is selling tattoo-style T shits.

** NUDE IS THE NEW BLACK
Designers have embraced a palette that's as fresh as a compact full of face powder. Makeup colors like ivory and blush dominate spring collections and have even infitrated Burberry's shoes.

** A TASTE OF BLUE HEAVEN
With their striking blue feet and mildly gamy taste, French Bresse chickens have inspired passion among connoisseurs, since gastonome Brillat-Savarin wrote about the velvety-textured birds in his 19th century The Psychology of Taste True Bresse aren't available in the U.S.' but now American has its own Blue Foot chickens. Bred in California, they're being served up in restaurants like Spago Palo Alto and New York City's Alain Ducasse. They're also available at dartagnan.com.

** BOWLED OVER BY RICE
Brown is usually sbout as wild as American get when it comes to rice, but prepare for an influx of more exotically colored grains like buttery Himalayan and Bhutanese red. There's also the Forbidden, a black varietal from China, and herby green Bamboo.

** HAMMING IT UP
Until recently, developing a tast for jamon iberico, made from acord-fed balck footed pigs, was'nt easy. The USDA's ban on the Spanish delicacy was lifted only last year. And even though the first shipments of whole hams aren't due to arrive until 2008, importer La Tienda already has alist of 200 customers who have palced $199 deposits for hams that will costs upwards of $1,000 when they are finally delivered. For those without that much cash or ptience, ths first chorizo and sausages made from the meat of these precious pigs will be available early nextyear.

** MICROSOFT'S Xbox 360 has the advantage of having already shipped, but Sony's competing game console may be worth the wait. Due out this spring, the PS3 is supposed to have better graphics and will support up to seven wireless game pads. (XBox 360 allows four) PS3's best advantage: it will play high definition Blu-ray DVDs. But at an expected retail price of $400 to $500, it won't come cheap.

**TAPPING INTO THE POWER OF FUEL CELLS
Could Medis Technologies turn the Energizer Bunny into roadkill? The company's disposable $19.99 fuel cell batteris will delvier up to 20 hours of cell phone hours talk time. Optional adapters allow it to juice up iPod and PDAs as well.

** CALL IT COOL
Scheduled for release this week is Palm's latest smart phone, the Treo 700w. Slightly narrower than its predeccessors, it will forsake the familiar Palm operating system for Microsoft's Windows Mobile. Available exclusively through Verizon Wireless, it should be able to take full advantage of Verizon's broadband network.
